Physical Environment

Landscape

Stockton Beach is a long sandy beach, which extends north from Newcastle Harbour (entrance to the Hunter River) the full length of the Newcastle Bight. The beach consists of Quaternary sand deposits (Newcastle Geological Series Sheet – SI 56-2).

Bathymetry & Substrate

At times of high river discharge, the seabed just off the beach up to at least the Stockton outfall can be covered by silt and organic material. At times of low river flow, the sea bed between the harbour and the outfall was clean white sand (Laxton & Laxton 1986).  The environment around the Stockton outfall consists of a long sandy beach with depths sloping gradually offshore.
